If you snore regularly and experience constant daytime sleepiness, you may have a condition called "sleep apnea." Obstructive episodes occur when the tongue or soft tissues of the throat or soft palate collapse onto the back wall of the upper airway, forming a blockage that prevents air from entering your lungs. A blockage can last from10 seconds up to several minutes, repeating itself dozens of times throughout the night. Five episodes per hour, per night are common. More than 15 episodes per hour, per night are the criteria used to diagnosis OSA. Some OSA snorers can have anywhere from 100-600 episodes per night.
Although it is as widespread as asthma and diabetes, sleep apnea often remains undiagnosed - a "hidden epidemic."
The most thorough way to test for sleep apnea is to book-in for an overnight stay at a sleep clinic, called a polysomnography, or PSG.
The PSG measures breathing and Apneas, chest movement, oxygen levels, REM, leg movement, brain activity, heart rate through about 25 external probes attached to your head, neck, chest, and legs. None of these tests require the puncturing of the skin. These measurements are monitored through the night. A full sleep study is the best and safest test for sleep apnea and its medical effects especially if there are other medical problems, take an overnight sleep study.
